Losing weight, no matter if it is through a bariatric weight loss program or another method, changes the dynamics of relationships. Spouses, lovers, friends and other family members will notice the change. Individually, people will respond to the weight loss in different ways. Most will be thrilled with your newfound health. Others may be jealous of the results. Good or bad, it is up to you to learn to overcome challenges and to embrace a new life .
Perhaps the first thing to realize is that you, yourself will change. Your self-esteem will improve. You’ll feel better about yourself as the weight comes off. This may make it easier for you to do things you once enjoyed, such as being active and it may reduce limitations you’ve had in the past, such as chronic health conditions. As a direct result, your outlook will change and that will affect what others receive and from you in your relationships.
Weight Loss Can Lead to Negative Experiences
In some situations, those who lose a significant amount of weight may have to deal with more complex, and sometimes, negative responses. This can be difficult. Have patience for them, too. Sometimes, it takes time for individuals to work through these types of complications. Give them time to adjust and to realize you are just a new-and improved – you.
On the other side, be sure you stay positive and focused on building or re-building relationships as well. Don’t walk away from the people who have been there for you throughout your lifetime because you are now fit. Avoid being the expert in weight loss, but encourage people through your actions and results. Embrace your new life with a sense of excitement. You will be building new relationships and working on improving the old ones, too. Though many relationships will be positive, some may have a negative tone at first, at least until you work to overcome those situations.
