“Fast Food” After Surgery; July 2011
Fast Food” After Surgery
For most of us fast food is a fact of life. We’re busy, we’re stressed, we’re in our cars, the kids are screaming, the list goes on. Fast food can fit into your diet after surgery but requires good decision making as well as some alterations to the menu item. Subtracting mayonnaise on all sandwiches can save 100 calories while eliminating cheese can decrease your order by 100-150 calories. Buns are out, opt to get your burger wrapped in lettuce instead. Choose grilled chicken instead of fried and avoid fried fish sandwiches altogether, they are lower in protein and high in low-quality calories. This should go without saying, but soda is no longer an option. Choose water and add a packet of sugar free flavoring or diet lemonade, just remember to wait 45 minutes before drinking after eating.
As for side dishes, skip the fries. They have a lot of calories without a lot of good nutrition. A salad or fruit will make a better side dish than high-fat French fries, as well as add vitamins, minerals, and fiber to your meal. No matter what you decide to order, remember to eat slowly, chew well, and stop when you’re full. You can always choose to make “fast food” at home as well for a fun meal idea that the whole family can enjoy!
Walking: How to start a walking group
Starting a walking group requires little effort and provides big rewards. Simply spread the word and get organized. Soon you’ll be walking toward better health.
If you crave solitude, walking on your own might be the perfect workout. But if you’d rather not go it alone, bring others along for your walking adventures. Getting support from others by walking together can actually help you stick with your health and fitness goals. To do that, consider starting a walking group. Starting a walking group is not that hard, and the rewards may well be worth a little extra trouble.
Enjoy the benefits of a walking group
You already know the health benefits of walking. Here’s what else you get when you walk with others:
Recruit members for your walking group
To start a walking group, just spread the word. Talk up your walking group among your family members, friends and neighbors. You might be surprised to find that you’re surrounded by people who are ready to lace up their walking shoes – and hold each other accountable for regular exercise.
Maybe you’d prefer recruiting colleagues. Ask your employer about having a friendly workplace competition. Challenge those in your work group to a pedometer contest, for example. The group that achieves the most steps takes home bragging rights or a simple prize. Or, keep track of the number of minutes of activity for the group and see who comes out on top each week.
